A Warm Welcome

Posted on Mon Oct 7th, 2019 @ 2:04am by Master Warrant Officer Benjiman Gates II & Lieutenant Commander R'Tan

Mission: Shore Leave - An Internal Affair
Location: USS Asger
Timeline: Current

R'Tan walked through the corridors of the ship, looking for his destination. He was also reviewing the files of all the new crew members coming on board. One, in particular, caught his interest and he wanted to meet him. Once he got to the Security office, he pushed the chime and waited to be invited in.

Ben's office was little larger than a closet, but he didn't need much. It was located within the larger Security office. He'd been there about half an hour, just going through and learning the Asger's systems and reviewing their protocols. He knew that every ship was different and he wanted to be comfortable and familiar with his new assignment.

He heard the chime sound and called out, "Come in."

R'Tan entered the office. "Hello, I am looking for Officer Gates."

"That's me, "Gates replied, "Ben Gates." He put out his hand to shake the other man's hand giving him an appraising look.

R'Tan took the man's hand and with a warm smile, he said. "Hello, Mr. Gates. My name is R'Tan I am the Chief Intel Officer on board this boat. I wanted to introduce myself. What brings you to our ship?"

"The wisdom of Command," he said with a nod. Noticing the pips on the man's collar, he added, "sir."

"Not that I have any objection, it's a promotion of sorts, I'm the only Security Investigations officer aboard the Asger."

"That's understandable. I am lucky enough to be given an assistant. But it's less because I deserve one, and more because Starfleet Intelligence wants to keep an eye on me. Some days, I would rather work alone." R'Tan said with a nod of understanding. "I know you just got here, but how are you settling in so far?"

"It's a bit of an adjustment, but I'm hanging in there. Thanks for asking. I was going to get some coffee. Would you like some too, or something else to drink?"

"I would love some, thank you. Black please." He said in response. "I saw your father is Ben Gates. He was the commander of the Resistance. I have heard many rumors about him, as well as read some of his mission reports. His name is very well known in the intelligence circles, though most deny anything when they are asked about him or his crew. What was it like to be raised by such a...unique father?"

That was the last thing that Ben had expected to be asked, but he did a passable job of keeping his face impassive as he moved to the replicator. He got two coffees, one black for his guest and the other with both cream and sugar for himself.

"It was a challenge, to say the least. It was hard for my mother and for my brother. I guess for all of us if I'm being honest."

"Don't get me wrong, I think he was a better father than a husband, but it was still hard."

"I think though the saying the apple doesn't fall far from the tree is true. My brother Kyle, we were twins, was the risk-taker, and I'm the one that chases skirt. But I'm not married."

"But that was probably too much information for you."

"In my line of business, and also yours, there is no such thing as too much information." R'Tan said as he took the coffee, nodded in gratitude, and took a small sip.

"Why did you never join Starfleet? I'm sure between your mother and father, they could have put in some good words for you to get you through. I mean, after your brother dropped out, I'm sure they would have been ecstatic for you to join and
succeed."

"I am Starfleet, I just didn't go to the Academy. I really wasn't interested in becoming an officer. That's why I went the non-com route. I got degrees in criminology. Being a Warrant Officer allows me to utilize that expertise and still serve the Federation."

"Fair enough. I don't want to keep you for too long, but I just want you to know, if you need anything, please don't hesitate to ask. We may be different departments, but we ultimately have the same agenda we are working towards."

"I couldn't agree more," the Warrant Officer replied holding out his hand, "thank you for the warm welcome. I'm pretty good at following bread crumbs. If you ever need my assistance, don't hesitate to ask."

R'Tan took his hand back. "I look forward to working with you." He then gave a nod of gratitude and walked out the door.

Ben nodded, watched the man exit his office.
